Clinical Trials E-Learning Module for Nurses

One of the primary objectives of the Consortium’s Nursing Workstream is to identify methods of formal educational opportunities for clinical trial nurses on the island of Ireland. To this end, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety for Northern Ireland commissioned Queen's University Belfast to develop an e-learning module aimed to advance the skills, knowledge, and training of clinical research nurses.

The module, which was made available for the first time in January 2007, provides an easily accessible training opportunity for clinical research nurses. All-Ireland participation has been facilitated with 46 participants attending from both the North and South to date. The module's online interaction is aimed to promote further learning and exchange of practice across the island of Ireland.

How is the module structured?

The module includes 12 weekly sessions, a majority of which are taught online with the exception of two face-to-face sessions at Queen's University Belfast: induction day and a session halfway through the course.

Who should apply?

Nurses wishing to extend their knowledge of clinical trials, or who are currently working in a clinical research post, are encouraged to apply. Entry requirements include a nurse or midwifery registration and/or evidence of diploma-level education or an equivalent in a related discipline.

What does the module include?

The content of this module will cover

  • Clinical trials and hierarchy of evidence
  • Critical appraisal of clinical trials
  • Quality of life assessment and clinical trials measures
  • Ethical issues in clinical trials
  • Research governance
  • Clinical trial management
  • Pharmacotherapeutics
  • Data interpretation
  • Research career development information
