Glossary Terms
abdomen (AB-doh-men)
The area of the body that contains the pancreas, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and other organs.
bile
A fluid made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Bile is excreted into the small intestine, where it helps digest fat.
enzyme (EN-zime)
A protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the body.
hepatic artery (heh-PA-tik AR-tuh-ree)
The major blood vessel that carries blood to the liver.
hepatic portal vein (heh-PA-tik POR-tul VAYN)
A blood vessel that carries blood to the liver from the stomach, small and large intestines, spleen, pancreas, and gallbladder. Also called portal vein.
