Researchers are interested in establishing the maximum tolerated dose and determining how this regimen affects the activity of certain tumor suppressor genes in patients with advanced solid tumors. 12.Targeting a Common Characteristic of Advanced Tumors (Posted: 01/02/2007) - In this clinical trial, doctors are testing the ability of a drug called topotecan to inhibit production of the protein HIF-1a and prevent hypoxic tumors from growing and spreading further. 13.Gene Therapy for Metastatic Cancer (Posted: 11/21/2006) - In the trial, researchers will harvest normal T lymphocytes from patients' blood and modify these immune system cells to recognize p53 protein, a common hallmark of many cancers. The modified cells will be enriched in the laboratory and then infused back into the patients. 14.Combining Targeted Therapies for Thoracic Cancers (Posted: 09/26/2006) - In this trial, patients with advanced thoracic cancers (cancers of the chest) or other cancers that have spread to the chest will be treated with the drugs romidepsin and flavopiridol. Researchers will study the safety of this combination and how these agents affect gene and protein expression in these patients. 15.Treatment for Malignant Ascites (Posted: 08/01/2006) - In this trial, researchers will randomly assign patients with malignant ascites to receive either octreotide or a placebo once a month for up to two years. The investigators will see whether octreotide can delay, or even eliminate, the need for paracentesis and assess side effects and quality of life of patients undergoing this treatment.
