Microarray Training Workshop of the
United States-Latin America Cancer Research Network (US-LA CRN)

This training workshop is intended to provide hands-on experience in the multi-step processing of tissue samples for microarray analysis. The goal of this workshop is to incorporate the multi-step processing of tissue samples into standard practice as it is performed throughout the breast cancer study “Molecular Profiling of Stage II and III Breast Cancer Study in Latin American Women receiving Standard Care Treatment.”
US/UK/EORTC Rare Tumors Initiative

NCI, the UK National Clinical Research Network, Cancer Research UK, and the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) organized a series of tumor-specific meetings, to follow up the December, 2010 NCI/ASCO meeting on International Clinical Trials in Rare Tumors. Invited international experts reviewed the disease itself and clinical trials to date, to identify opportunities for international clinical trials and establish a program for ongoing international collaboration in rare tumors.

U.S.-Mexico Cytogenetics Laboratory Standardization Project

This workshop included site visits and a one-day workshop with institutions and laboratories located near Mexico City to determine the current state-of-the-science and to introduce a pilot program for the standardization of cytogenetics testing, reporting, and review. The workshop was co-organized by NCI, American Society of Hematology (ASH), and Agrupación Mexicana para el Estudio de la Hematología (AMEH).
International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) Biennial Meeting

The primary purpose of the INCTR Biennial Meeting is to ensure that all INCTR branches, offices, programs, and collaborating centers provide reports of recent and past activities and have an opportunity to exchange information about ongoing or planned projects and propose new activities, including approaches to funding. INCTR’s 2011 Meeting will have as its major themes pediatric cancer, including HIV associated malignancies, palliative care, and education and training of health professionals.

This workshop and symposium was co-developed by NCI, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Federación Latinoamerica de Sociedades de Cancerología (FLASCA) to advance clinical research by providing educational activities designed to enhance cancer prevention, clinical studies, and epidemiological cancer research with a specific emphasis on the needs of Latin America.
Overcoming Barriers to International Clinical Trials in Rare Cancers

This meeting will bring together international stakeholders including representatives of NIH and the NCI-sponsored Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program, to consider when international trials might be appropriate for studying rare cancers, develop a systematic approach to prioritize such trials, and to work on practical issues that would enable such collaborations to be conducted in a speedy and cost-efficient manner.

The US-LA CRN held its second annual meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil November 10th-12, 2010. The meeting focused on the operational and scientific aspects of the recently-launched breast cancer clinical study conducted by partners in five Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay.
