Instituto Nacional del Cáncer (NA-shuh-nul KAN-ser IN-stih-TOOT)
El Instituto Nacional del Cáncer (National Cancer Institute), que forma parte de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de los Estados Unidos de América (National Institutes of Health of the United States Department of Health and Human Services) es el organismo principal del Gobierno Federal para la investigación del cáncer. El Instituto Nacional del Cáncer conduce, coordina y financia la investigación en cáncer, la capacitación, la diseminación de información de salud y otros programas relacionados con la causa, el diagnóstico, la prevención y el tratamiento de cáncer. Se puede visitar el portal de Internet del NCI en http://www.cancer.gov. También se llama NCI.
nutrición (noo-TRIH-shun)
Asimilación y uso de los alimentos y otro material nutritivo que realiza el cuerpo. La nutrición es un proceso de tres etapas. Primero, se consumen los alimentos o la bebida. Segundo, el cuerpo descompone los alimentos o la bebida en nutrientes. Tercero, los nutrientes se desplazan por el torrente sanguíneo hasta diferentes partes del cuerpo donde se usan como "combustible" y para muchas otras finalidades. Para darle al cuerpo la nutrición adecuada, una persona tiene que comer y beber suficientes alimentos que contengan nutrientes clave.
prevención (pree-VEN-shun)
En medicina, medidas tomadas para reducir las probabilidades de contraer una enfermedad o afección. Por ejemplo, la prevención de cáncer incluye evitar los factores de riesgo (como tabaquismo, obesidad, falta de ejercicio y exposición a la radiación) y aumentar los factores protectores (como realizar actividad física en forma regular, mantener un peso normal y seguir un régimen saludable de alimentación).
