Fox Chase Researchers Find Routine Blood Test Predicts Prognosis in Aggressive Skin Cancer

A routine blood test may help predict survival in patients with an aggressive form of skin cancer known as Merkel cell carcinoma, according to new findings by Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers... Researchers found that patients with Merkel cell carcinoma who had low numbers of lymphocytes—a type of white blood cell that participates in immune function—didn't live as long after treatment as those with higher lymphocyte counts.
