Icy therapy spot treats cancer in the lung

Frozen balls of ice can safely kill cancerous tumors that have spread to the lungs, according to the first prospective multicenter trial of cryoablation. The results are being presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology's 38th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans. Institutions that contributed to the study are: Institut de Cancerologie Gustave Roussy, Villejuif Cedex, France; Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.; University of California–Los Angeles; Karmanos Cancer Institute, Detroit, Mich.
Among the research institutions NCI funds across the United States, it currently designates 67 as Cancer Centers. Largely based in research universities, these facilities are home to many of the NCI-supported scientists who conduct a wide range of intense, laboratory research into cancer’s origins and development. The Cancer Centers Program also focuses on trans-disciplinary research, including population science and clinical research. The centers’ research results are often at the forefront of studies in the cancer field.
