Scene 1
After a woman has had a mammogram and a positive diagnosis has been made of breast cancer by a trained radiologist, she is then referred to an oncologist for treatment, who may suggest that she enroll in TAILORx, or the Trial Assigning IndividuaLized Options for Treatment (Rx).
Scene 2
Women with early stage breast cancer will usually have surgery to remove the tumor. In TAILORx, once a tumor mass is removed, it is then cut into thin slices and processed by Genomic Health Inc. This company manufactures Oncotype DX, a molecular test that is conducted using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissue.
Scene 3
Oncotype DX analyzes the expression of a panel of 21 genes (the genes that are overexpressed are indicated here in red) and the results are provided as a Recurrence Score
(0-100). The gene panel was selected and the Recurrence Score calculation was derived through extensive laboratory testing and multiple independent clinical development studies.
Scene 4
Women participating in TAILORx will be assigned to treatment based on their Recurrence Score. Women with a recurrence score of 11 to 25 will be randomly assigned to receive adjuvant hormonal therapy, with or without chemotherapy. Women in the chemotherapy arm will receive one of several standard combination chemotherapy regimens considered to be the best available standard care today. |
