The Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24) provides Associate level Clinician-Scientists with clinical duties and independent R01 or R01-like Patient-Oriented Research support protected time for 1) patient-oriented research and 2) to mentor early-stage clinical investigators.

Patient-Oriented Research is defined as research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects. This area of research includes: 1) mechanisms of human disease; 2) therapeutic interventions; 3) clinical trials; and 4) the development of new technologies. Studies falling under Exemption 4 for human subjects research are not included in this definition.

Applicant Eligibility

  • At the time of the award, the candidate must be a citizen of the United States, or a noncitizen national, or must have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence and possess an Alien Registration Receipt Card (1-151 or 1-551) or some other verification of legal admission as a permanent resident
  • Citizenship or green card is not needed to apply. Citizenship or green card is needed at the time of award issuance

Investigators with active independent, peer-reviewed research support for patient-oriented research
Effort Level/ CommitmentThe candidate must commit between 3.0 - 6.0 calendar months (25-50%) full-time professional effort to the research and mentoring proposed in this award

The K24 award is renewable one time
