There are many possible goals of cancer care, from prevention, to cure, to prolongation of life, to relief of suffering, to optimizing quality of life, to achieving a good death. No one goal is inherently more valid than another. Specific clinical skills are needed for negotiating care goals and establishing what is important to the patient.
