Trial Description

Purpose:

Screening tests may help doctors detect cancer cells early and plan more effective treatment for cancer. It is not yet known if ultrasound is more effective with or without measuring CA 125 levels in detecting ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women.

Randomized clinical trial to study the effectiveness of ultrasound with or without measuring CA 125 levels in detecting ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • 50-74 years old
  • No previous ovarian cancer
  • No previous surgery to remove both ovaries
  • For more information about the eligibility criteria for this trial, refer to the Health Professional version.

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups.

As part of the study, participants in group one will not be screened for ovarian cancer using CA 125 levels or ultrasound.

Participants in group two will have CA 125 levels measured and will undergo ultrasound.

Participants in group three will undergo ultrasound followed 6-8 weeks later by a repeat ultrasound.

All participants will complete questionnaires at 3.5 and 7 years.

Important:

For more details about this trial, refer to the Health Professional version of the trial summary.
