Trial Description

Purpose:

The herb ginger may help to reduce or prevent nausea and vomiting in patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer.

This randomized phase II trial is studying how well ginger works in reducing or preventing nausea and vomiting in patients who are receiving chemotherapy for cancer.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Currently receiving a chemotherapy regimen and experiencing nausea and vomiting
  • Must have experienced nausea and vomiting while receiving at least one previous chemotherapy regimen
  • Scheduled to receive ondansetron, granisetron, or dolasetron while receiving chemotherapy
  • No previous chemotherapy regimens doses received on more than 1 day
  • More than 1 week since ginger tea, ginger capsules, or ginger tinctures
  • For more information about the eligibility criteria for this trial, refer to the Health Professional version.

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. Patients in group one will receive low- dose ginger by mouth twice a day. Patients in group two will receive high-dose ginger by mouth twice a day. Patients in group three will receive a placebo by mouth twice a day. Treatment in all groups will begin after chemotherapy and continue for 3 days. Patients will be evaluated at 1 week.
