Trial Description

Purpose:

Vatalanib may be effective in preventing the development of leukemia in patients who have myelodysplastic syndromes.

This phase II trial is studying vatalanib to see how well it works in treating patients with primary or secondary myelodysplastic syndromes.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

• At least 18 years old
• No previous leukemia or brain tumor
• More than 1 year since stem cell transplantation
• More than 1 year since chemotherapy or radiation therapy for another disease
• More than 1 month since biological therapy or surgery
• More than 1 month since hormone therapy for myelodysplastic syndrome

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will receive vatalanib by mouth once a day. Treatment may continue for as long as benefit is shown. Patients will be evaluated periodically for up to 5 years.
