Trial Description

Purpose:

Tipifarnib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for their growth and may make them more sensitive to radiation therapy. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Giving tipifarnib together with radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells.

This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of tipifarnib when given together with radiation therapy in treating patients with unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

• At least 18 years old
• At least 4 weeks since chemotherapy
• No previous radiation therapy to the upper abdomen

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will receive tipifarnib by mouth once or twice a day for 8 weeks. They will also undergo radiation therapy 5 days a week in weeks 2-8. Patients will be evaluated at 1, 3, and 6 months.
