Trial Description

Purpose:

Some drugs such as bleomycin or doxycycline, or other compounds like talc, may help to control fluid in the chest caused by cancer. It is not yet known if bleomycin, doxycycline, or talc is more effective in treating patients with malignant pleural effusions.

Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of bleomycin, doxycycline, or talc in treating patients with malignant pleural effusions.

Eligibility:

  • At least 18 years old
  • No previous bleomycin
  • For more information about the eligibility criteria for this trial, refer to the Health Professional version.

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will undergo placement of a catheter. Patients will be randomized to receive treatment with either bleomycin, doxycycline, or talc. Treatment may be repeated 3 days later. Patients will receive follow-up evaluations once a month.
