somatic variant

(soh-MA-tik VAYR-ee-unt)
A genetic alteration that occurs after conception and is not present within the germline. Somatic variants can occur in any of the cells of the body except the germ cells (sperm and egg cells). An individual who has a somatic variant cannot pass it on to their children. Some somatic variants may lead to cancer or other diseases. Also called somatic mutation.
