Quick Facts

  • Four-year program
  • Provided by the Health Research Board (HRB) of Ireland, the Health and Social Care Research and Development (HSC R&D) Division of Northern Ireland, and CGH
  • Leads to a Ph.D. degree in health economics and encourages successful participants to pursue careers in health economics on the island of Ireland
  • Includes 10 months of coursework in health economics, cancer prevention, and health policy—based mainly in Ireland and Northern Ireland
  • Followed by two years of mentored research, typically with an NCI-selected mentor in the United States, and a final year of mentored research at an affiliated host institution in Ireland or Northern Ireland
  • For the Fellowship program, the HRB provides:
    • Ph.D. stipend for four years
    • Contribution towards student registration fees
    • Costs associated with travel
    • Cost of health insurance for the duration of the fellow’s stay in the U.S
    • Funds to enable the fellow to attend one relevant scientific meeting per year of research

Requirements

You must:

  • Be a graduate or researcher with a primary degree in in a relevant discipline, such as epidemiology, biostatistics, or economics – you may also have a degree in medicine, pharmacy, health services research, social sciences, or other sciences Previous training or experience in health economics is beneficial, but not essential
  • Be eligible for a J1 visa to work in the United States
  • Have worked or trained in the Republic of Ireland within the past 12 months
