Cancer Education and Career Development Program (R25T)

The Cancer Education and Career Development Program (R25T) supports the development and implementation of curriculum-dependent programs to train predoctoral and postdoctoral candidates in cancer research settings that are highly interdisciplinary and collaborative. This program is particularly applicable to cancer prevention and control, epidemiology, nutrition, and the behavioral and population sciences.

Applicant Eligibility

PI Criteria

Citizenship

At the time of the award, the candidate must be 

  • a citizen of the United States, 
  • or a noncitizen national, 
  • or must have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence and possess an Alien Registration Receipt Card (1-151 or 1-551) or some other verification of legal admission as a permanent resident.
Career Stage Established Investigators (Associate or Full Professors)
Commitment Salary support allowed; 5-10% commitment recommended
Duration of Award Up to 5 years

R25T Program Eligibility Criteria

Program PI PI must have independent peer-reviewed cancer-focused R01 or R01-like funding at the time the R25T application is reviewed.
Program Faculty

Program faculty (mentors) must have independent research support and experience in conducting collaborative, team-oriented research.

At least 50% of faculty must have independent R01 or R01-like cancer-focused research support.

Pre-Doc: Post-Doc Ratio No more than 25% of the individuals supported on new NCI-supported R25T grants can be predoctoral.
Foreign Trainee Ratio At least 75% of the program participants salaried on an NCI-supported R25T grant each year must be U.S. citizens or Alien Registration Receipt Card Holders (1-151/ 1-551).

Program Participant Eligibility Criteria

Citizenship, Foreign Nationals, and Student Visas Because this is an educational and not a training mechanism, non-U.S. citizens may participate in this program. However, the participation of each individual on a temporary visa must be justified.
Career Stage Pre- and postdoctoral program participants
Effort Level/Commitment 0-12 calendar months
Duration of Appointment To be determined by the institution
(Minimum of 2 years – the duration is usually 2-4 years)

Budget

R25T Allowable Costs

Program PI Salary support for leadership, management, coordination and evaluation of the Program, in accordance with the percent effort commitment to the Program
Program Faculty

Salary support for design, development, implementation, and refinement of the specialized curriculum in accordance with the percent effort commitment to the Program.

Partial salary for a dedicated administrator is allowable.

Advisory Committee Salary support will not be provided to the Program Advisory Committee for their service.
Ancillary Personnel Support Salary for mentors, secretarial and administrative assistance, etc., is not allowed.
Advertising A small proportion of the budget can be used for advertising and recruitment.
Other Program-Related Expenses Consultant costs, equipment, supplies, travel for key persons, and other program-related expenses must be justified.
F&A Costs/Indirect Costs 8%

Financial Support for Each 25T Program Participant

Salary
  • Pre-docs up to $22,000
  • Post-docs up to $75,000
Research Development Support: Tuition/Fees, Supplies/Equipment, Travel, and Statistical Services
  • Pre-docs up to $20,000
  • Post-docs up to $30,000
