somatic mutation

(soh-MA-tik myoo-TAY-shun)
A genetic alteration that occurs after conception and is not present within the germline. Somatic mutations can occur in any of the cells of the body except the germ cells (sperm and egg cells). An individual who has a somatic mutation cannot pass it on to their children. Some somatic mutations may lead to cancer or other diseases. Also called somatic variant.
