morphine sulfate

(MOR-feen SUL-fayt)
A drug used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is made from a natural substance found in the seed pods of the opium poppy plant. Morphine sulfate works by binding to opioid receptors, such as the mu opioid receptor, in the central nervous system and other tissues. This blocks pain signals and changes how the body responds to pain. It is a type of opiate and a type of analgesic (pain reliever).
