anthracycline
(AN-thruh-SY-klin)
A type of antibiotic that comes from certain types of
Streptomyces
bacteria. Anthracyclines are used to treat many types of cancer. Anthracyclines damage the DNA in cancer cells, causing them to die. Daunorubicin, doxorubicin, and epirubicin are anthracyclines.
