Comprehensive Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health (CPACH)

Three people in lab coats - two men and one woman - sit at a small table near a large window. One of the men is smiling at his colleague. In the corner is a desk with a computer and binders.

Initiated in 2001, the Comprehensive Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health (CPACH) is a program that provides institutional awards for the development of partnerships between Resource Limited Institutions (RLIs) and NCI-designated Cancer Centers (CCs). The current CPACH Program will only accept applications for the U54 CPACH. The CPACH develops and maintains comprehensive, long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships between Resource Limited Institutions (RLIs) and NCI-designated Cancer Centers (CCs). CPACH aims to achieve a stronger national cancer program and addresses challenges in cancer research, including a focus on advancing research on health drivers that contribute to differences in cancer outcomes across all populations, developing and implementing cancer research experiences and research education for scientists and students as well as conducting cancer outreach and engagement.

What CPACH Does

The CPACH Program aims to achieve a stronger national cancer program and addresses challenges in cancer and cancer research, including a focus on advancing research on health drivers that contribute to differences in cancer outcomes across all populations, as well as cancer outreach and engagement. For purposes of this program, health drivers include factors such as age, socioeconomic status, education, genetics, exposures, and geographical location.

The institutions in each partnership are expected to work collaboratively to:

  1. Increase the capacity of cancer research of the RLIs.
  2. Improve the effectiveness of CCs in developing and sustaining research programs focused on advancing cancer research on health drivers that contribute to differences in cancer outcomes across all populations.
  3. Develop and implement cancer-related outreach and education initiatives that benefit all the surrounding communities.

Each partnership must include well-developed research projects ("Full Research Project") and pilot, exploratory projects. The partnership must target cancer research, including a focus on advancing research on health drivers that contribute to differences in cancer outcomes across all populations, as well as community outreach, and community engagement. These combined activities are expected to increase the number of peer-reviewed publications and secure independent peer-reviewed funding from NIH and other funding agencies.

It is expected that all activities should be planned to:

  • Increase the participation of the RLIs in the nation’s cancer research and research education enterprise.
  • Increase the competitive research capacity of RLIs.
  • Increase competitive grant applications from scientists supported by the partnership.
  • Increase the involvement and effectiveness of CCs in cancer research on health drivers contributing to differences in cancer outcomes across all populations and their impact on surrounding populations.
  • Develop more effective outreach, engagement, and education initiatives that will impact the surrounding communities.
  • Identify and share innovative methods and approaches that strengthen and sustain each partnership. Each partnership must have an Internal Advisory Committee (IAC) and a Program Steering Committee (PSC).
