Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center
Northwestern University
Chicago, Illinois

The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University was founded in 1974 and received its NCI designation in 1998. The Center is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of 21 cancer centers dedicated to high standards of cancer research, patient care, education, and community outreach.

The Lurie Cancer Center (LCC) is committed to the process of discovery, advancing medical knowledge, and providing compassionate, state-of-the-art cancer care and training for the next generation of clinicians and scientists. The Center’s 275 members are clinicians and scientists who are organized into nine major programs, conducting basic, translational, and clinical research. They offer prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care programs for all cancer patients.

The major research strengths of LCC reside in breast, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, aerodigestive, neurologic, and gynecologic cancers; hematologic malignancies; and pediatric oncology. The Center’s members conduct basic and translation research in programs ranging from hormone action/signal transduction, angiogenesis, and biologic therapies to nanotechnology.

A full range of medical, surgical, and radiation oncology treatment facilities is complemented by screening facilities and programs for breast, prostate, colon, and ovarian cancers. LCC has built a comprehensive, multidisciplinary women’s cancer center and offers a regional genetic testing and counseling service. Additionally, it has a model academic Hospice/Palliative Medicine Program, a comprehensive program in liver-directed therapies, the multidisciplinary Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute, and fertility preservation services.

The Center’s laboratory and research space is on both Northwestern University’s main and medical school campuses. LCC is affiliated with four teaching hospitals in the Chicago area: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Children’s Memorial Hospital, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and the Jesse Brown Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. At the same time, primary and tertiary care programs are available on the main medical center campus to treat patients. The Center accrues patients to over 250 therapeutic clinical trials annually.

The ambulatory cancer care facility provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care, including hematology/oncology, surgical subspecialties, radiation oncology, and psycho-social care. A 2009 addition provided ambulatory cancer care space for women’s cancer services. In 2007 and again in 2010, new hematology/oncology units were added to expand capacity in all cancer diagnostic areas.
