Trial Description

Purpose:

Imatinib mesylate may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking the enzymes necessary for tumor cell growth.

This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of imatinib mesylate and to see how well it works in treating patients with a recurrent brain tumor that has not responded to previous surgery and radiation therapy.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

• At least 18 years old
• Measurable or evaluable disease
• At least 2 weeks since biological therapy
• At least 2 weeks since vincristine, tamoxifen, surgery, or isotretinoin
• At least 4 weeks since other chemotherapy
• At least 12 weeks since radiation therapy

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will receive imatinib mesylate by mouth twice a day. Treatment may continue for as long as benefit is shown. Patients will be evaluated every 2 months.
