Trial Description

Purpose:

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Drugs such as pentoxifylline and hydroxyurea may make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy.

Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of radiation therapy plus pentoxifylline and hydroxyurea in treating patients who have high-grade astrocytoma or glioblastoma.

Eligibility:

  • At least 19 years old
  • No previous radiation therapy or chemotherapy
  • At least 7 days but no more than 3 months since surgery or biopsy

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will receive radiation therapy twice a day 5 days a week for 4 weeks. Patients will also receive a 5-day continuous infusion of hydroxyurea and pentoxifylline during each week of radiation therapy. Patients will be evaluated at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, every 3 months for 2 years, and then every 4 months for 5 years.
