ACOSOG-Z0030, NCT00003831

Trial Description

Purpose:

Surgical removal of all lymph nodes in the chest may kill cancer cells that have spread from tumors in the lung. It is not yet known whether complete removal of all lymph nodes in the chest is more effective than removal of selected lymph nodes in treating patients who have stage I or stage II non-small cell lung cancer.

Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of complete removal of all lymph nodes in the chest with that of selected removal of lymph nodes during lung cancer surgery in treating patients who have stage I or stage II non-small cell lung cancer.

Eligibility:

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will have selected lymph nodes removed from the chest. Patients with negative lymph nodes will then be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Patients in group one will undergo surgery to remove tumors in the lung. Patients in group two will undergo surgery to remove nearly all the lymph nodes in the chest plus tumors in the lung. All patients will receive follow-up evaluations every 2-6 months for 2 years and once a year thereafter.

Important:

For more details about this trial, refer to the Health Professional version of the trial summary.
