Posttreatment Considerations
This section is for patients who have had no cancer treatment for at least 6
months. The causes of fatigue are different for patients who are receiving therapy compared to those who have completed therapy. Also, the treatment for
fatigue may be different for patients who are no longer receiving treatment for
cancer.
Fatigue in people who have completed treatment for cancer and who are
considered to be disease-free is a different condition than the fatigue
experienced by patients receiving therapy. Fatigue may significantly affect
the quality of life of cancer survivors. Studies show that some patients
continue to have moderate-to-severe fatigue for up to 18 years after bone
marrow transplantation. Long-term therapies such as tamoxifen can also cause
fatigue. Fatigue can cause poor school performance years later in children who
were treated for brain tumors and cured. Long-term follow-up care is important
for patients after cancer therapy. Physical causes should be ruled out when
trying to determine the cause of fatigue in cancer survivors.

Glossary Terms
bone marrow transplantation (bone MAYR-oh tranz-plan-TAY-shun)
A procedure to replace bone marrow that has been destroyed by treatment with high doses of anticancer drugs or radiation. Transplantation may be autologous (an individual's own marrow saved before treatment), allogeneic (marrow donated by someone else), or syngeneic (marrow donated by an identical twin).
brain tumor
The growth of abnormal cells in the tissues of the brain. Brain tumors can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer).
cancer (KAN-ser)
A term for
diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and
can invade nearby tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to
other parts of the body through the blood and lymph
systems. There are several main types of cancer. Carcinoma
is a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line
or cover internal organs. Sarcoma is a cancer that begins in
bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other
connective or supportive tissue. Leukemia is a cancer that
starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow, and
causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced
and enter the blood. Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are
cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system.
Central nervous system cancers are cancers that begin in
the tissues of the brain and spinal cord. Also called malignancy.
cure
To heal or restore health; a treatment to restore health.
fatigue
A condition marked by extreme tiredness and inability to function due lack of energy. Fatigue may be acute or chronic.
follow-up
Monitoring a person's health over time after treatment. This includes keeping track of the health of people who participate in a clinical study or clinical trial for a period of time, both during the study and after the study ends.
quality of life
The overall enjoyment of life. Many clinical trials assess the effects of cancer and its treatment on the quality of life. These studies measure aspects of an individual’s sense of well-being and ability to carry out various activities.
tamoxifen (tuh-MOK-sih-FEN)
A drug used to treat certain types of breast cancer in women and men. It is also used to prevent breast cancer in women who have had ductal carcinoma in situ (abnormal cells in the ducts of the breast) and in women who are at a high risk of developing breast cancer. Tamoxifen is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. It blocks the effects of the hormone estrogen in the breast. Tamoxifen is a type of antiestrogen. Also called tamoxifen citrate.
