About NCI Center for Global Health

Researchers collaborating in the lab.

The Center for Global Health (CGH), led by Edward L. Trimble, MD, MPH, is NCI’s principal team responsible for coordinating and prioritizing NCI’s global activities to advance global cancer research, build expertise, and leverage resources across nations to address the challenges of cancer and reduce cancer deaths worldwide. Our specific objectives are to:

  1. Create sustainable international partnerships
  2. Support programs that address global gaps in research and scientific training
  3. Disseminate information and best practices that drive improvements in cancer research and cancer control

In 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released their Global Health Strategy which directed the NCI to employ our professional expertise to advance global health diplomacy and improve global health outcomes. In response to this, NCI Director Dr. Harold Varmus created CGH by merging the cancer research staff, resources, key activities, programs, and knowledge of the NCI Office of International Affairs, Office of Latin American Cancer Program Development, Office of China Cancer Programs, and the NCI Liaison Office in Brussels.

Our Vision: CGH is a catalyst for reducing the global cancer burden through coordination, collaboration, and communication with a diverse range of international stakeholders.

Our Mission: Create sustainable international partnerships, support programs that address global gaps in research and scientific training, and disseminate information and best practices that drive improvements in cancer research and cancer control.
