Added text to state that the impact of adenoma detection rates (ADRs) was assessed in a health maintenance organization in follow-up after 314,872 colonoscopies done from 1998 to 2010 by 136 gastroenterologists; the goal was to determine rates of interval colorectal cancer (CRC), interval advanced CRC, and CRC death; however, limitations of the study included the inability to determine which specific feature of ADR led to reduced interval cancer and that harms of colonoscopy associated with ADR could not be measured (cited Corley et al. as reference 61).
Added text about a subsequent study of stool DNA markers that utilized a new multitargeted stool test and combined methylation markers for NDRG4 and BMP3, several KRAS mutations, and a human hemoglobin immunoassay; among 12,776 participants who had colonoscopy screening, were enrolled from 2011 through 2012 at 90 sites in the United States and Canada, and were aged 50 to 84 years, 9,989 had fully evaluable results; a receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that the multitargeted test has a higher sensitivity than fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) alone (cited Imperiale et al. as reference 85).
Added text to state that overall, the multitargeted test was more sensitive than FIT for both CRC and advanced precancerous lesions but was less specific.
