This randomized phase II trial studies how well lidocaine with or without music therapy works in reducing discomfort in patients undergoing mammography. Lidocaine and listening to calming music may help to reduce the amount of discomfort experienced during mammography.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
I. To determine in a randomized trial whether it is possible to decrease the discomfort and anxiety of mammography by using the local analgesic lidocaine, or by using calming music in patients receiving a mammogram.
OUTLINE: Patients are randomized to 1 of 4 groups.
GROUP I: Patients receive lidocaine topically on right breast and placebo topically on left breast 30-75 minutes before undergoing mammography. Patients also receive music therapy during mammography.
GROUP II: Patients receive lidocaine topically on right breast and placebo topically on left breast 30-75 minutes before undergoing mammography.
GROUP III: Patients receive lidocaine topically on left breast and placebo topically on right breast 30-75 minutes before undergoing mammography. Patients also receive music therapy during mammography.
GROUP IV: Patients receive lidocaine topically on left breast and placebo topically on right breast 30-75 minutes before undergoing mammography.
After completion of study treatment, patients are followed up periodically.
