Developing and Evaluating a Culturally Tailored Yoga Therapy Program for Cancer Patients Undergoing Stem Cell Transplantation in India, Tanzania, and United States

This clinical trial develops and evaluates a yoga program for patients undergoing stem cell transplant in India, Tanzania, and United States. Yoga combines gentle movements, breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and meditation all tailored to the participant’s needs. Yoga has no connection to a specific religion or spiritual practice and is intended to align with each person’s personal belief system. Culturally adapted Yoga may improve quality of life in cancer patients undergoing stem cell transplantation.
Inclusion Criteria
Cancer patients scheduled to undergo an autologous or allogeneic HSCT at Monroe Dunaway (MD) Anderson, Healthcare Global Enterprises (HCG), or Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).
Age 18 or older
English, Hindi, or Swahili speaking
Able to sign a written informed consent and be willing to follow protocol requirements
Exclusion Criteria
Extreme mobility issues that preclude participating in the YT
Major thought disorders such as schizophrenia or uncontrolled bipolar disorder
Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) comorbidity score of 3 or higher, excluding cancer diagnoses

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
I. To develop a culturally tailored yoga therapy (YT) program for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients.
SECONDARY OBJECTIVES:
I. To optimize the HSCT YT program using an iterative process.
II. To the examine feasibility of adherence and follow-up completion.
OUTLINE: Patients are assigned to 1 of 2 arms.
ARM I (AIM I): Patients participate in interviews on study.
ARM II (AIM II): Patients undergo yoga therapy sessions up to 3 times a week (TW) up to 12 sessions.
