A Study of a New PET Scanner in Patients with Cancer

This trial tests the effects of breath holding, how the radiotracer given moves through the body and how the timing of the scan works for a whole body PET scan for completing diagnostic imaging for patients with cancer. A PET scan is a procedure in which a small amount of radioactive glucose (sugar) is injected into a vein, and a scanner is used to make detailed, computerized pictures of areas inside the body where the glucose is taken up. Because cancer cells often take up more glucose than normal cells, the pictures can be used to find cancer cells in the body. Breath holding while undergoing can reduce motion blur (when an image looks less sharp because the body is moving, such as during breathing) and produce clearer images of lesions. Giving a radiotracer before the scan and completing an additional dynamic scan can show how the radiotracer moves into and out of tumors and healthy organs over time and completing a scan after the planned scan may show may make tumor tissue easier to see because of washout (when the radiotracer leaves healthy tissues over time). By examining these different imaging techniques, researchers may determine the best way to use the whole body PET scan for completing diagnostic imaging for patients with cancer.
