Aminolevulinic Acid Hydrochloride in Visualizing Tumors in Patients with Newly Diagnosed or Recurrent Malignant Gliomas Undergoing Surgery

This phase II trial studies how well aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride works in visualizing tumors in patients with newly diagnosed malignant gliomas or malignant gliomas that have returned after a period of improvement who are undergoing surgery. Aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is a fluorescent substance that can make tumor cells glow under a microscope with a special blue light that may help visualize and remove as much tumor as possible without harming healthy tissue.
