This pilot trial studies how well the extra layer of support (ELOS) web-based tool works in engaging participants with stage IV solid tumors or stage III pancreatic or lung cancer in palliative care. A web-based tool, such as ELOS, may help participants learn about cancer and what all the terms (words) mean, understand available treatment options, share preferences and decisions with their cancer team, and transform anxieties and worries into a plan of action that can be controlled.
Study sponsor and potential other locations can be found on ClinicalTrials.gov for NCT03532997.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
I. To introduce patients with advanced cancer to supportive care resources, including specialty palliative care, through a novel application (app) called “ELOS” (stands for “extra layer of support") in a prospective cohort study.
II. Compare participant acceptance of this new electronic tool to industry standards and follow ultimate referrals to outpatient palliative care compared to historical, matched controls.
OUTLINE:
Participants receive the ELOS web-based tool to help create a Support Map conversation guide to prepare for speaking with cancer doctors at clinic visits.
