This trial studies how well the Colorectal Health Research Champions educational intervention works in preventing colorectal cancer. The Colorectal Health Research Champions project trains local colorectal cancer survivors, caregivers, or advocates as Colorectal Cancer Research Champions. By using Colorectal Cancer Research Champions from the community, information regarding colorectal cancer prevention and clinical research comes from members of the community; with the knowledge being disseminated through established cultural and social networks.
Study sponsor and potential other locations can be found on ClinicalTrials.gov for NCT04812743.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
I. Increase colorectal screening knowledge and intentions (age 45 to 74), deliver referrals for those who are eligible and remained unscreened, and increase screening uptake among men and women who meet the age specifications for colorectal cancer screening.
II. Increase community knowledge about and participation in clinical trials and biospecimen provision by linking eligible individuals to available Massey Cancer Center (MCC) clinical trials and enrolling interested community members into the Virginia Living Well Cancer Prevention and Control Research Registry (HM20012418), an established community-based registry accessible by MCC researchers for biospecimen studies and future study recruitment.
III. Increase Colorectal Health Research Champion (CHRC) self-efficacy in presenting information related to colorectal cancer screening and clinical trials to their social networks.
IV. Assess the effectiveness of using Colorectal Health Research Champions, made up of cancer survivors, caregivers and advocates, to bring positive colorectal cancer screening and colorectal cancer research and bio-specimen collection messages to their social networks in the rural, urban, and suburban areas of Virginia.
V. Evaluate knowledge acquisition and attitudinal change in Colorectal Health Research Champions and their house chat attendees.
VI. Evaluate the effectiveness of events organized by Colorectal Health Research Champions, to disseminate colorectal health screening and clinical trials messages and affect health behavior.
VII. Strengthen the evidence of the effectiveness of the Colorectal Health Research Champion (CHRC) training program.
