Trial Status: closed to accrual

This phase II trial studies the effect of metformin in treating patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and smoldering multiple myeloma. Metformin is a drug that is taken in pill/capsule form. It is commonly used to treat people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This trial is to understand whether metformin could be used in the future to help prevent patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and smoldering multiple myeloma from developing multiple myeloma. This trial may also help doctors to understand the impact of metformin on early multiple myeloma cells in the body.
