The High Risk Breast Cancer Program, WAR Study

This study investigates the predictors of adherence to cancer prevention guidelines for body mass index (BMI), alcohol consumption and physical activity and the effect of combined adherence to these cancer prevention guidelines on developing invasive breast cancer in women with benign breast disease. Information from this study may help researchers better understand the causes, treatments and prevention of cancer and other diseases.

Inclusion Criteria

All patients must be greater than 18 years of age
All patients must speak Spanish or English
Patient must meet one of the following eligibility criteria * One or more first-degree relatives (mother, daughter, or sister) with pre-menopausal breast cancer * Two or more first-degree relatives with post-menopausal breast cancer * Tested positive for a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation * A history of biopsy-proven atypical ductal hyperplasia or atypical lobular hyperplasia * A history of biopsy –proven lobular neoplasia or lobular carcinoma in situ
Informed consent must be signed

Exclusion Criteria

Lack of mental competence as judged by medical, study staff
Unwillingness to participate in all aspects of this study

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

I. To establish an informational resource from which other studies can be built upon.

OUTLINE:

Patients undergo collection of blood samples and have their medical records reviewed. Patients' previously collected tissue samples are also accessed.
