Integrating Cervical Cancer Screening and Preventive Therapy with Family Planning Services for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer in the Republic of Mozambique

This clinical trial evaluates the impact of providing cervical cancer screening and preventative therapy (CCST&PT) with family planning (FP) services for women of the republic of Mozambique. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common infection that is spread through sexual contact and patients may have it without having any symptoms. Sometimes it goes away on its own. If it does not go away on its own, it can cause genital warts and certain cancers, including cervical cancer. Providing CCST&PT with FP may help doctors find cervical cancer soon, when it may be easier to treat.

Inclusion Criteria

Women 30 – 49 years or all women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Not currently pregnant
Patients with a cervix (women who have undergone a total hysterectomy with removal of the cervix are not eligible)
Living in Maputo or Gaza
Willing and able to provide informed consent for services

Exclusion Criteria

Not meeting the inclusion criteria
Physical or mental impairment that inhibits participation in the study
Pregnant women

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:

I. To quantify the health impact of CCS&PT on the uptake of voluntary FP services.

II. To quantify the health impact of voluntary FP on the uptake of CCS&PT services.

III. To determine which promotional strategies are most effective to increase uptake of CCS&PT services.

IV. To identify cost to deliver high quality CCS&PT services integrated into existing voluntary FP programs.

V. To determine client and provider acceptability of integrated CCS&PT and voluntary FP services using new screen and treat technologies.

OUTLINE:

Patients undergo HPV testing and during family planning services. Patients and providers may participate in focus group and/or interview over 1 hour.
