Evaluating an Active Biopsy Guidance System for Detecting Lesions Requiring Biopsy in Patients with Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders
This clinical trial evaluates the Active Biopsy Guidance (ABG) system for detecting lesions requiring biopsy in patients with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD). The ABG system consists of an optical mapping scope and a high-resolution microendoscope. The optical mapping scope lets researchers look at a wide area of the lining of the mouth by shining different colors of light into the mouth and taking pictures. The high resolution microendoscope lets researchers look at a very small area of the lining of the mouth at high magnification. Proflavine is a fluorescent dye that glows green in the dark which may help improve the pictures taken with the ABG system. The development of an imaging system to provide precise guidance for doctors to decide when and where to perform biopsies of oral lesions has the potential to improve management of patients with OPMD, and to limit unnecessary interventions for patients at low risk for oral cancer.
