Red Blood Cell Transfusion Thresholds for Improved Quality of Life for Patients Undergoing a Pancreatectomy for Pancreatic Cancer
This clinical trial tests the feasibility of running a larger randomized controlled trial, testing different thresholds for giving red blood cell transfusions on disease free survival and quality of life in patients undergoing pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer. A randomized controlled clinical trial is a study in which the participants are divided by chance into separate groups that compare different treatments or other interventions with a control group. Pancreatectomy is a surgery to remove all or part of the pancreas and can be associated with significant blood loss (anemia). Anemia slows recovery from major surgery such as pancreatectomy and can impede the quality of life. Blood loss can result in clinically important anemia causing fatigue. Pancreatic cancer itself can be associated with malnutrition and fatigue. Having a red blood cell transfusion threshold strategy that results in a more liberal use of transfusion may improve the quality of life for patients undergoing pancreatectomy for pancreatic cancer.
