Methylene Blue Mouthwash for the Treatment of Oral Mucositis Pain in Patients with Cancer

Trial Status: complete

This phase III trial compares the effect of methylene blue mouthwash to standard of care mouthwash for the treatment of oral mucositis pain in patients with cancer. Oral mucositis is one of the most common toxicities associated with cancer treatment regimens which has profound impact on the patient experience. Ulcerations caused by mucositis are typically nonuniform and can merge to form one large lesion. The oral cavity is the most common site for mucositis, which can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract. It is characterized by large, painful, deep ulcerations of the oral mucosa. There are numerous mouthwashes and topical coating agents which are widely available for oral mucositis, however, there is currently no gold standard for symptomatic treatment of mucositis. Using methlylene blue mouthwash may improve oral pain in patients with oral mucositis related to cancer and/or cancer treatments compared to usual standard of care.
