A Text Messaging Intervention (Annie) to Improve Adherence to Repeat Colonoscopy in the VA

Trial Status: closed to accrual

This clinical trial tests how well Annie, a text messaging intervention, works to increase adherence to repeat colonoscopy in the Veterans Affairs (VA). Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in both men and women. Routine colonoscopy can significantly reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. A national study found that about 38% of colonoscopy appointments following a positive fecal occult blood test were missed, cancelled or rescheduled. Reminders and guidance through the bowel prep process are strategies that may reduce appointment wait times and increase screening rates. Text messaging is used widespread and is low cost and able to deliver real-time information discreetly. Annie text messaging may increase colonoscopy adherence in patients due for a repeat screening or surveillance colonoscopy.
