Question Prompt List Communication Intervention for Improving Self-Efficacy and Communication Outcomes in Patients with Gynecological Cancer, ASQ-GYO Trial

Trial Status: active

This clinical trial tests the Ask Questions in Gynecologic Oncology (ASQ-GYO) communication intervention for improving self-efficacy and patient-provider communication outcomes in patients with gynecological cancer in outpatient gynecologic oncology clinics. Care for patients with gynecologic cancer is multifaceted and complex, requiring providers to have nuanced treatment discussions, share devastating news, and honor that gynecologic cancers affect the organs that patients may associate with core aspects of their being. Patient involvement in these discussions and satisfaction with their care is paramount and can improve patient outcomes such as quality of life and adherence to treatment. A question prompt list (QPL) is a list of questions tailored to a specific medical context designed to encourage information gathering and elicit the preferences of a patient and their support people with the goal of preparing and empowering patients to participate actively in clinical interactions. QPLs have been shown to improve patients’ self-efficacy, increase the number of questions asked, decrease anxiety at follow up, and increase recall of information. Patients having access to the ASQ-GYO QPL communication intervention prior to their clinic visit may increase patient self-efficacy to ask questions, and may improve patient-provider communication outcomes during the first clinic visit.
