Understanding and Addressing Rejection of Personalized Breast Cancer Risk Information in Women

Status: closed to accrual

This study evaluates the mechanisms driving personalized cancer risk rejection in the context of screening mammography in women.

Inclusion Criteria

* Female sex * Age 39-49 (i.e., people who are eligible for routine breast cancer screening and for whom guidelines recommend an informed, risk-based decision) * Being able to read English

Exclusion Criteria

* Prior diagnosis of breast cancer, DCIS, LCIS, known BRCA1/2 gene mutation, Cowan syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome * Having received previous chest radiation for treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:

I. Understand the scientific nature of risk rejection.

Ia. Identify demographic and psychological factors associated with risk rejection.

Ib. Identify how risk rejection affects risk-concordant mammography screening behavior.

OUTLINE: This is an observational study.

Participants complete surveys, receive personal breast cancer risk estimate and education on breast cancer screening and prevention and have medical records reviewed on study.
