Routine Cavity Shave Margins or Selective Shave Margins Using Savi Scout in Treating Stage I-II Invasive Breast Cancer or Stage 0 Breast Ductal Carcinoma in Situ

Trial Status: active

This phase II trial compares the effect of routine cavity shave margins to selective shave margins using Savi Scout® in treating in patients with stage I-II invasive breast cancer or stage 0 breast ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Partial mastectomy with routine cavity shave margins and partial mastectomy with selective margins are two standard procedures where the surgeon uses the Savi Scout to locate the cancerous lump. The entire cancerous lump and some normal looking tissue surrounding the lump (a margin) are removed. For cavity shave margins, the cavity is then shaved to remove another layer of tissue (shave margin). For selective margins, the surgeon then selectively removes additional tissue (selective margins) guided by the Savi Scout. The Savi Scout is a new surgical guidance system that does not use radiation or wires. It is a device used for locating and removing breast lesions. Selective shave margins using Savi Scout may decrease the volume of tissue removed with no change in positive margin rate compared to routine cavity shave margins in treating in patients with stage I-II invasive breast cancer or stage 0 DCIS.
