AI-Generated Contours for the Improvement of Prostate High-Dose Radiation Brachytherapy Planning
This clinical trial studies whether artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to help doctors outline (contour) the prostate on ultrasound images to make custom radiation treatment plans for high-dose radiation (HDR) brachytherapy for prostate cancer. HDR brachytherapy is a type of internal radiotherapy where a radioactive source is temporarily placed inside or near a tumor to deliver a high dose of radiation in a controlled burst. Before prostate HDR brachytherapy can be delivered, a doctor develops a treatment plan by reviewing contours of the prostate on ultrasound images. This is to make certain the radiation is delivered in a safe manner. However, prostate contouring on ultrasound imaging can be difficult, especially for residents or fellows/new attendings (new learners) who are still developing their skills. AI is the branch of computer science that deals with writing computer programs that can solve problems creatively. AI can be used to review the planning ultrasound images and create prostate contours. New learners can then review the AI-generated prostate contours and make edits as appropriate. This may be an effective way to review prostate contouring and create a customized prostate HDR brachytherapy plan.
