The Pink and Pearl Campaign to Increase Lung Cancer Screening in Women Undergoing Breast Cancer Screening at Christian Hospital
This clinical trial studies whether the Pink & Pearl Campaign works to increase lung cancer screening (LCS) in women who are undergoing breast cancer screening at Christian Hospital. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in the United States (U.S.), with up to 90% of cases associated with smoking. Nearly as many women die of lung cancer yearly as breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers combined. Detecting lung cancer early through LCS has the potential to save lives; however, LCS completion remains low in the U.S. The reasons for this may include lack of patient education and awareness regarding LCS, lack of familiarity with LCS among primary care physicians, patient anxiety over a potential diagnosis, and unequal access to screening services. The Pink & Pearl Campaign is tailored to identify women who are of the target age for LCS and who are at a higher risk of developing lung cancer. Once a woman is identified, she is approached during her breast cancer screening appointment and offered a LCS referral. This may make it easier to schedule a LCS appointment, which may increase LCS in women who are undergoing breast cancer screening at Christian Hospital.
