A Multi-Channel Communication Campaign to Increase Human Papillomavirus Vaccination in Chambers County, Alabama, OPERATION WIPE OUT Trial
This clinical trial studies whether a multi-channel communication campaign designed and delivered by high school students works to increase human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Chambers County, Alabama. The discovery that high-risk HPV infection is related to several cancers, including cervical cancer, led to the development of the preventive HPV vaccine. Since its approval, the HPV vaccine has shown to offer protection against 90% of cervical cancers. Despite this, HPV vaccination has remained low in Chambers County which has the highest cervical cancer rate in the state of Alabama. The multi-channel communication campaign in this study is designed and delivered by high school students. The students first attend a Leadership Academy which covers core leadership skills as well as specific knowledge and skills needed for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the campaign. The students work together to engage the community and use their leadership skills through a community project that informs individuals of the importance of HPV vaccination. This may be an effective way to increase HPV vaccination in Chambers County, Alabama.
