This clinical trial tests how well music therapy works for reducing pain for pediatric cancer patients with oral mucositis. Oral mucositis, is characterized by painful sores in the mouth, and is a common side effect of high-dose chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell or bone marrow transplantation. Despite its high prevalence and impact on quality of life, effective pain management strategies for pediatric oral mucositis remain limited and often rely heavily on medications that may cause significant side effects or provide insufficient relief. Music therapy can improve both physical and emotional wellbeing and may offer a promising non-medication option for reducing pain.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
I. Explore the experiences of oral mucositis pain in pediatric patients. (Phase 1)
II. Explore how pediatric patients perceive the involvement of music therapy during oral mucositis pain. (Phase 1)
III. Examine the effect of music therapy interventions on oral mucositis pain in pediatric patients. (Phase 2)
IV. Assess the mechanisms underlying pain reduction through the music therapy interventions. (Phase 2)
V. Understand patient perspectives on how the music therapy interventions influence oral mucositis pain. (Phase 2)
OUTLINE: Patients are assigned to 1 of 2 phases. Parents are assigned to phase 1.
PHASE 1 (OBSERVATIONAL): Patients and their parent complete an interview, over 1 hour, to discuss their experiences of receiving music therapy while experiencing oral mucositis pain.
PHASE 2: Patients are assigned to 1 of 2 arms.
ARM I: Patients undergo active music making, over 30 minutes, as part of music therapy. Patients then cross over to arm II.
ARM II: Patients undergo passive music listening, over 30 minutes, as part of music therapy. Patients then cross over to arm I.
