Biennial Contrast-Enhanced Mammography Screening to Improve Breast Cancer Detection in Women with a Personal History of Breast Cancer
This clinical trial studies whether contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) screening offered every other year (biennial) improves breast cancer detection in women with a personal history of breast cancer. Standard mammography, even three-dimensional mammography, is inadequate for screening women with a personal history of breast cancer; therefore, contrast-enhanced screening is preferred in this patient population. Contrast enhancement is commonly used in other imaging techniques, such as contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and contrast-enhanced computed tomography. The contrast enhancement consists of injecting a United States Food and Drug Administration approved iodine-containing “dye” into the bloodstream that allows doctors to better see masses that may represent cancer in the breasts. CEM is similar in nature to a standard mammogram, only the iodine-containing dye is injected before the usual two-dimensional mammogram is performed. Biennial CEM screening may be an effective way to improve breast cancer detection in women with a personal history of breast cancer.
